Indo-Global Education Summit launched

Saturday

150 varsities from across the globe taking part along with 500 Indian institutions

HYDERABAD: Former Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has welcomed private participation in the education sector but urged them not to commercialise the sector and ensure inclusive growth.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Indo-Global Education Summit here on Friday, organised by the Indus Foundation. He reminded that education plays a key role in the development of the nation and he hoped that the summit will discuss new themes and will give new directions for taking higher education to the unreached.

R.P. Agarwal, former Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, spoke on the apprehensions of Indian institutions over the entry of foreign universities and the goals of Foreign Educational Institutions Bill introduced in the Parliament this year. He felt there will not be exodus of good teachers from the Indian institutions to foreign institutions in India as feared and this has been proven with the IITs, IIMs and Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore retaining their faculty despite entry of private players with attractive offers.

On the other hand, he felt, they will create more competition and attract good talent towards teaching. At the same time, he observed that there was a need for protecting Indian institutions. He felt there was a need for stringent norms to ensure entry of quality players only and not fly-by-night operators. Pawan Kumar Agarwal, Civil Servant from government of West Bengal; George Iwama, Vice-Chancellor, University of Northern British Columbia; Goldy Hyder from Carleton University, Ontario, Canada and G. Subrahmanyam, Vice-Chancellor, Gitam University also spoke. C.D. Arha, Chairman of the summit and S.B. Anumolu, president, Indus Foundation also spoke.

Exploring opportunities

The summit is being held at Hotel Marriott from December 3 to 5 with the objective to explore opportunities for academic collaborations between Indian institutions and foreign universities apart from guiding Indian students about opportunities for higher education in foreign universities in over 40 countries. Entry is free for Indian students.

An estimated 150 universities from around the world and 500 Indian educational institutions will be present. The summit will have sessions on Engineering & IT, Business & Management, Life Sciences & Biomedicine, Natural Sciences, Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences. There will be interaction among representatives of Indian institutions and those of foreign universities for collaborations.

Growth in Web-Based Applications - Akamai Technologies, India

    Web Infrastructures and Web Applications

Bangalore, India-November 30, 2010: Akamai Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of cloud optimization services, in partnership with IDC, today unveiled the findings of the IDC Asia-Pacific Web Application Survey 2010 titled, "Prepare to Scale Your Web Infrastructure to Meet Imminent Growth in Cloud and Mobility."

This survey  is focused on trends driving demand for Web applications, and reveals that businesses have become dependent on the Internet for their daily operations.  The survey also outlines the challenges IT departments face as they strive to improve application performance and the end-user experience.

According to the survey results, Web applications delivered over the cloud will surge by 40% over the next 12 months and drive IT managers to further improve the performance of their Web infrastructures.  26% of the 423 organizations polled have experienced productivity issues due to poor access to Web applications.

David Kenny, President of Akamai said, “Organizations in the Asia Pacific region are increasingly turning to the Web to support their employees, customers and entire ecosystem of partners and suppliers.  Indian businesses are rapidly migrating more applications to the Web, and we can expect dramatic growth in Web application adoption over the coming year.

With this expected surge in Web-based application traffic, Indian organizations will need to leverage cloud-based solutions for ensuring the performance and scale of this mission-critical content.” Organizations were queried about their business expansion plans as well as the utilization of Internet and cloud-based computing for business functions.

Initial findings show incredible growth in the Asia-Pacific region – about 32% of the organizations polled across Asia-Pacific plan to set up branch offices over the next 12 months, with India leading with aggressive business expansion plans.  Such expansion will change the nature and complexion of the workforce.

With increased mobility and business agility, companies are able to expand their operations quickly and cost-effectively. According to Adrian Dominic Ho, principal for IDC's Asia-Pacific Practice Group covering Communications and Service research, and author of the IDC white paper, growth in extended enterprises will also contribute to the rise of the borderless world, resulting in a surge in Web application adoption.

One of the most challenging tasks IT managers will face is ensuring they deliver acceptable levels of Web application performance, and thus a superior user experience. With more than 50% of organizations currently conducting online transactions, the big growth areas over the next 12 months will be mobile access and streaming video.

For mobile access, organizations in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia are leading the region, with up to 86% of those in Malaysia expected to have mobile access to Web applications over the next 12 months.  In view of this, 20% of organizations across the region plan to give employees mobile access and support bandwidth-heavy streaming video applications over the same period.

One of the key reasons organizations invest heavily in Web applications is to empower their employees and build an extended enterprise.  Increased mobility means organizations have to think about providing employees easy access to corporate applications, regardless of their location.

Greater workforce mobility, growing adoption of mobile technology for business use; and recent improvements in centralized visibility, management, and control of mobile costs, have rendered mobility an inexpensive and important strategic asset for many organizations.

One of the key factors driving the growth in enterprise mobility is the proliferation of smart devices, which give employees ubiquitous access to business applications.  In the region, IDC expects smart phone penetration to reach 100% by 2015 in the mature markets, while emerging markets will require a further two to three years.

Cloud services have been one of the most-discussed technologies over the last 12 to 24 months. The number of applications that will be delivered via the cloud is expected to increase by 40% over the next 12 months, albeit from a low base.  ANZ and Singapore are leading with having corporate applications delivered over the cloud today.

India is expected to experience a doubling in cloud adoption, with the proportion of applications being delivered over the cloud expected to surge by 100% over the next 12 months. Top Issues Faced by Organizations

Across India, security concerns continue to dominate with more than 15% of respondents citing this as their top concern, as more data-sensitive applications are made available online.  More importantly, security teams often find it challenging to keep up with the increase in security vulnerability, as more applications are added onto the Web.

Other top concerns across the region were poor performance of Web applications, an inability to access rich media applications, delays in rolling out rich content applications, and the inability to efficiently share files.

Future Outlook Web application delivery

According to IDC, the application delivery market will experience another year of innovation and market expansion.  To meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities, organizations must be prepared with a strategy and commitment to deliver higher levels of application performance to the expanding branch offices and growing pool of mobile or remote workers.

With the era of the pervasive cloud upon us, organizations also need to acknowledge that further adoption of cloud services, mobility, video, and social media will place greater pressure on Web infrastructures.  However, there is no better time than now to have a concrete, strategic plan and road map for Web application delivery.

Core says its collaboration with an international institute will help it build a seamless campus in India. While infrastructure would be provided by Core, the campus would be that of a foreign university.

“We have earmarked Rs 400 crore for the schools. While Rs 150 crore will be from internal accruals, Rs 250 crore will be raised via debt as and when the projects are finalised,” added Mansotra. Chennai-based Everonn Education and Educomp Solutions, two companies which are also technology provider to educational institutions, have laid out education plans for their companies.

While Everonn Education plans to open 300 schools over the next five years at a total investment of Rs 3,600 crore. Everonn has also firmed up plans to open around 25 B-schools across the country in the next few years with an investment of around Rs 250 crore.

Everonn also offers teacher training and courses in hospitality and animation and gaming education in association with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Delhi-based Educomp Solutions, another technology service provider to educational institutions, has also ventured across education spectrum-primary, vocational, professional, test preparation and higher.

Educomp has also partnered with 14 state governments covering over 14,500 government schools and benefiting 7.9 million students. The company through its Raffles Millennium International brand, offers courses in creative arts, design, lifestyle and business management.

It would soon venture into offering courses in law, paramedics and engineering through its Millennium Academy of Professional Studies. The academy will be launched next year. “We do not have any plans to establish a university at present as we are looking at professional courses.

What is your Unique Selling Proposition or USP? Indian Students is Important to the World Universities!

New Delhi, 29th November:  Why do you want Indian students at your institute?

Our purpose is to build partnerships with Indian institutions in those subject areas in which UAD is in a leading position such as: creative industries (digital media, computer games, computer arts, software engineering); environmental sciences (biotechnology and civil engineering), etc.

Our long-term goal is academic collaboration to enhance our students’ experience and research potential by working with partners to understand the Indian higher educational sector and cooperate in the exciting expansion of higher education currently being planned by the Indian government.

How is India important to you as a country?
With its plans to develop 800 new universities and several thousand institutions of vocational learning in the next 10 years, plus there is India’s anticipated economic growth of 9 per cent per annum; India is important to the world — a country which we in Scotland must partner if we are to stay competitive.

Which are your most popular programmes?
UAD’s leading position is in the computer games and related digital media subjects. UAD is the Centre of Excellence for computer games education in the country and our association with corporates in this sector has been acknowledged by the Scottish and UK governments through their major investments in the university. But of course as a comprehensive university we also have popular programmes in biomedical and biotechnology sciences.

Any new initiatives?
We have an MoA with MIT Pune in computer games/arts related subjects and have recently signed one with IIIT Allahabad in Information Technology and many more subjects. We are also working with MIT on links with their various management schools.

What is your Unique Selling Proposition or USP?
High quality education producing graduates who create their own businesses as well as being valuable employees.

Are you thinking of any scholarships for Indian or international students?
Yes, we are presently developing a range of scholarships that will reward excellence. A formal announcement will be made in the next few weeks.

With the foreign education Bill in the pipeline, do you plan to open a full-fledged campus in India?
There is discussion on some developments although you will understand if at present we cannot go into detail. However, it is worth remembering that UAD is the leading UK university in an extremely important sector to the developing Indian economy and education sector- the digital creative media.

I am therefore hopeful that we will be playing an important role as the government in India further progresses its dynamic plans for 14 innovation universities.

Indian students represent 15% of all international students in US higher Education

GMAT and TOEFL Tests are More Taken by Indian Students

Chennai, 30th Nov: Recession, economic downturn and job cuts notwithstanding, the craze for studying abroad has not waned among Indian students if some finding are to be believed. Not only did enrollment of Indians in US universities go up by 2 per cent this year, more Indians are taking the GMAT and TOEFL examinations with a view to joining universities abroad than from any other country.

The largest number of foreign applications received for admission to nearly two-third of the US full-time MBA programmes were from Indian students - only one fifth of the programmes received more applications from Chinese students - according to GMAC, an international association of business schools and owner of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

TOEFL administrators said that India consistently represents one of the top five countries with the largest numbers of TOEFL test takers. “We have seen a 5% increase in the number of Indian TOEFL test-takers,” an official spokesperson said.

Further, the Institute of International Education that releases its annual Open Doors report on international education, said: “Students from India increased by 2% to a total of nearly 105,000. Indian students represent 15% of all international students in US higher education.

Together, the top three sending countries-China, India and South Korea-comprise nearly half (44%) of the total international enrollments in U S  higher education.”   In 2010, Canadian graduate management programs received the largest number of foreign applications from Indian citizens.

The increased demand for MBA course could be because of the fact that nine in 10 MBA alumni from the class of 2010 had managed to land jobs three months after graduation. The results represent a slight improvement from 2009, when 84 percent of new MBA alumni said they were employed three months after receiving their degrees.

The MBA graduates of 2010 also said that they received higher starting salaries than their counterparts from the class of 2009, according to the GMAC Alumni Perspectives Survey.

The median starting salary for 2010 graduates was US$78,819, up from US$75,000 for those who graduated in 2009.  Students graduating in 2010 were significantly more optimistic about the economy in general compared with last year’s graduates

GMAT(Graduate Management Admission Test) to replace Essay with "Integrated Reasoning" from 2012

Monday

The Graduate Management Admission Test — the dominant test for MBA admissions, will soon have a new section, designed to test the ability of would-be business students to analyze multiple kinds of information.

The new "integrated reasoning" questions will present test-takers with a spreadsheet, a table, text and other information and then ask either single or multiple questions. While the answers will be multiple choice, there will likely be multiple correct answers, with test-takers asked to list all correct answers. These new questions will replace one of the two GMAT essays and will be reported in a new score, while preserving existing scores for the essay and the verbal-quantitative total. The new section will be added in 2012.

The reason that the GMAT was open to a challenge is that it is not a test specific to business schools, but rather features general verbal, quantitative and writing sections. While designed to test someone's ability to succeed in a business program, the test itself doesn't stress economics or accounting or any specific business school skill set or at least that has been the case until now.

As an example of the kind of questions that might be on the test, the students might receive a spreadsheet with data on the number of passengers and flights in and out of 21 airports, and then be asked to respond to a series of statements about the data and/or other information with regard to the various airports. Many of the questions may not be factual, but may be about trade-offs raised by certain choices.

The new questions will take 30 minutes and with the elimination of the essay, will not add to the time of the test (currently 3.5 hours).

In September the company’s Finance Chief said they were preparing to “waging a war for talent” and given that only around 350 job were posted on the job’s site in March 2009 it appears he wasn’t kidding around.

Ram Charan’s Orange film - The movie is Clean Entertainer with less mass elements

Friday

Ram Charan’s characterization as Ram is quite different and Genelia’s characterization as Genny with full packed energy

Brahmanandam’s comedy as Puppy is the main highlight

Bhaskars’s new story line with distinct concept. The movie is clean entertainer with less mass elements.

Ram Charan’s Orange Sky Diving scene in the ‘Hello Rammante’ song is appreciable

Picturisation of all the songs and the cinematography is great.

Second half slows down a bit.

Here is the order of the songs in the film:
1st song: Syndey nagaram

2nd song: Nenu Nuvu Antu…

3rd Song: Hello Rammanttee

4th song: O Range

5th Song: Rooba Rooba

6th song: Chilipiga

Overall, a different and a fresh love story with some rocking performances.

Orange is undoubtedly and arguably the most awaited Telugu movie of the season. It is no wonder that Orange Movie Review is the most searched keyword today and it shows the craze and expectations on the film. Orange movie starring Ram Charan and Genelia has rocking music, rib tickling comedy, eye pleasing visuals, heart touching dialog and many more. Read on Orange Movie Review to know more about it…

Story:

Jaanu (Genelia) is a confused hyperactive girl who is desperately waiting to fall in love. She is in search of an everlasting love and Ram (Charan) falls for her in the very first look. After convincing Jaanu to fall in his love, he says that he can’t love her forever. He tells her that he can only love for sometime as he believes that true love doesn’t exist forever. Jaanu tries to avoid him, he tries to adore her. So where does this love story head?

What is the reason for Ram to lose belief in the concept of ‘love forever’ sums up Orange movie.

Analysis:

Orange starts off on a confusing note. Director thought of narrating this love story with a bang and keeps the audience glued right from the start.

But somehow it lacked clarity at the start. The characters behave in an awkward way and it takes time for the audience to get used to them and understand their ideology. The narration settles down after the first song and the pace picks up. Hero’s typical characterization is the conflict in this love story. And that very characterization is the driving factor of this story and infuses comedy into the proceedings. First half runs smoothly and aptly supported by good music.

As the story is simple and straightforward, the director didn’t go for unnecessary bangs for the sake of intermission. Second half too starts off good with some well written scenes. The scene where the hero plays truth and dare game and the scene in which he practically explains the difference between everlasting love and true love is excellent.

Even the flashback of the hero starts off well. Actually, the first 45 minutes after interval is the best part of the film. Orange Love Idi and Rooba Rooba are well picturized songs among all the six and these songs too fall during this period of time.

However, the graph rapidly falls right after Rooba Rooba song as the director starts to explain his ideology about everlasting love. The film heads towards climax in an unconvincing manner. Director lacked clarity during the last half hour that many of the audience in the auditorium will be left confused of what is going on the screen.

Hero changing his mindset all of a sudden is not brought on to the screen in a convincing way. This part needs more depth and good dialog to leave a mark on the audience, sadly that didn’t happen! To sum it up this Orange film is sweet up to seventy percent and turned utterly sour towards the end.

Performances:

Ram Charan has gone for a complete image changeover in this film. His previous two films are action based and targeted mainly at the mass audience. In Orange Ram Charan tried to woo the urban crowds and youngsters. He is simply rocking in this movie. His costumes, hairstyle and gadgets are sure going to become a rage among the college goers in coming days. Mega fans might be little bit disappointed with Charan’s dances as there are no landmark steps in this film. Most of the dance movements are stylish and cool and in sync with the music. Ram Charan is surely lagging behind Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan in the comedy department. His comedy timing needs to be improved a lot. Saying so, he has given a matured performance in Orange. His performance towards the climax shows his caliber as an actor.

Genelia is as lively as ever. She is supreme cool in those ultra modern costumes and chic look. Her character has shades of Bommarillu Hasini, but not that much entertaining.

Shazahn Padamsee has good looks and has delivered a neat performance. She has the potential to become a busy heroine if given right opportunities.

Brahmanandam’s comedy as Puppy is good in few scenes. Avasarala Srinivas excelled in a tiny role called Pushkar. Nagababu is standard. Prakash Raj is perfect. Prabhu is neat. Vennela Kishore and the other person who played Charan’s friend are good. Manjula and others did their part.

‘The New Leader’- Dr. Daniel Goleman said that Indian CEOs need to work more on their Emotional Intelligence.

Dr. Daniel Goleman, the legendary name in Emotional Intelligence and Leadership and author of many best sellers including ‘The New Leader’ said that Indian CEOs need to work more on their Emotional Intelligence.

Indian managers are high found to be high on IQ & better in things like expansion plans, M&A, & inner strength but low on things like excellence in execution, team leadership, empowerment accountability, which relates to EQ, when compared to their counterparts in the West or China. Dr. Daniel was on his visit to India to address a two day Summit on "Emotional Intelligence and Leadership" in New Delhi on November 23 and 24.

"Social Awareness, Empathy has to be built in the system to develop team for long term & create harmony in working relationships", said Dr. Goleman while commenting on leadership styles. "Attitudinal change was the single biggest factor in bringing change in HPCL" added Ashis Sen, DGM HPCL & Vice Chairmen FEIL (Forum for Emotional Intelligence).

Dr. Daniel, who shot to fame with New York Times bestseller "Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships" based his opinion on the widely popular ‘Hay’s Profile’ – the most widely used job evaluation methodology used in over 8,000 organizations worldwide.

Prof Sanghamitra Budhapriya of FORE School of Management, who herself has authored two books in behavioural studies added, "Indian organisation need to put extra efforts on boosting the EQ of its leaders as we have a vast pool of talents waiting to be global business leaders.

Organisations investing on developing this skill set for their employees have already started getting results. The RoI soon gets reflected in the balance sheets" Indroneil, coach & facilitator in behavioural competencies said, "IQ in the neighbourhood of 110-115 fails as a predictor of success in a career.

In other words, you need to be smart enough to handle the cognitive complexity of the information you need for a given role or job, but after reaching that threshold of "smart enough," your intellect makes little difference and that’s when overall competence comes into play and EQ takes over."

When asked by a young participant on how the subordinates of Indian Managers should manage their superiors, or is their a bottom-up approach, Dr. Daniel said, "a chunk of young employees often leave organisations as they do not get along with their bosses, on the low emotional connect, aspect." In a lighter vein he added, "in such cases bosses resume’s should be sent to recruitment consultants."

In India the entire conditioning since childhood is done on cognitive practices essentially marks one gets in school or college then CAT or the entrance exam scores for higher education and at a later stage the salary he earns becomes a parameter to judge his professional success and then suddenly one expects him to show empathy & be emotionally intelligent!

This is not something which is easy to happen, Nirmalya Pal added. Organized by the Forum for Emotional Intelligence Learning, the Seminar was supported by Government of India and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. FEIL, was created by the coming together of eminent academicians and professionals committed to a common cause of building caring and compassionate Leadership.

The objective of the seminar was to include learning inspirational leadership and to develop oneself and others for improved individual and organizational performance and effectiveness. Dr. Daniel also touched upon ‘Ecological Intelligence’ the new concept, in which each of us is a stake holder.

Ramcharan and Genelia's Orange is a Good Entertainer

ORANGE film songs, and colorful visuals tries to look at love from a fresh perspective

Love by default is a complex emotion. Ramcharan Teja, along with his director Bhaskar tries to explore this in Orange. Problem for both of them is that this one comes after the blockbuster Magadheera, and the director and the actor will have to keep up with high expectations.

The audio becoming a huge hit adds more to their worries. Let’s see if Orange breaks the shackles of these expectations. What’s it about: Ram (Ramcharan Teja) lives in Australia with his sister (Manjula) and brother in law (Sanjay Swaroop). He falls in love with Janu (Genelia), a college going girl and is trying to woo her. Problem is Ram is different.

He likes sky diving, is a painter but prefers graffiti, is a photographer but likes wild life photography. Quite romantic one would think but, Ram is too straightforward for a girl’s liking. In the process of making Janu fall for him, Ram tells her that he’s had nine girl friends already.

That wouldn’t be an issue too, but the problem gets worse – Ram thinks that love is good only for some period of time! Janu is in a fix - whether to accept Ram’s harsh truth about how love fades over a period of a time or to stick to her point that life-long love exists. The problem for her is that Ram is pretty convincing.

Even love stories of Janu’s friends, which seemed pretty and nice in the beginning, seem to fall apart. However, Janu is one adamant girl, and Ram, inspite of his weird theories, is very intense in love. Orange tells who is right and who is wrong.

A film like Orange, which questions the validity of love is a tough story to tell. Bhaskar should first get applause for choosing this kind of story and Ramcharan too deserves a tap on shoulder to act in this one. He is very convincing in his theory that over a period of time, love between couple evaporates into thin air, and that most couples have to resort to lies to stay in a relationship.

He uses good songs, and colorful visuals to communicate his theory. As far as actors are concerned, both Ramcharan and Genelia look million bucks. They not only compete with each other with their expressions, but also end up winning hearts. Shazahn Padamsee looks cute too, but her character isn’t too long to talk about her acting abilities.

Madhurima is there in a guest role too. Gayatri Rao of Happy Days, Vennela Kishore don’t have big roles either, but they do whatever they are given with conviction! Actors like Prakash Raj, Prabhu, Manjula, Sanjay Swaroop do their bits well, but it is Brahmanandam as Puppy, who gets more screen time than each of these actors.

He evokes maximum laughs in the theaters, and it is by trying to convince him that the director tries to prove his ideology. Naga Babu has a very small role, and he shows how subtlety convinces more than loud theorizing. He is just terrific!. However, making a film such as this one is like walking on a tight rope, and Bhaskar isn’t always successful with this.

The biggest problem in the movie is why Ram actually falls in love 10 times, when he himself says that he doesn’t believe that love doesn’t last for long! The director carefully avoids this question, and weaves a story to convince his point once, twice, again and again and again.

Also the director doesn’t establish why the heroine, even though she is convinced with Ram’s theories, still wants to have a long lasting love. Yes he questions today’s love stories but he doesn’t come up with a solution other than Stephen Covey’s famous words – “Keep Loving”! Also the problem never gets to its emotional reason, even with a hackneyed flashback.

The final reason why our hero starts to accept change is far from convincing. On the whole, even though the beginning of the second half starts off well, it becomes too long till the climax. Cinematography by Rajasekhar is great. He uses Australia to the maximum, and creates great visuals.

He excels even in few scenes that have been shot in Mumbai. Dialogues and screenplay are good, for most part of the movie. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are a hit already, and they are shot well. Re-recording adds a lot of feel to the movie. Editing by Marthand K.Venkatesh is to the point.

Few of Charan’s fans might be disappointed the way his dances have been choreographed. Fight scenes were mostly unnecessary and the skydiving fight is pure indulgence.  Love, the way it is seen these days, needs to be questioned. However, that doesn’t make any sense when such a topic is dealt with half baked theories about it, formed because of one or two emotional situations.

This is Orange’s short coming, otherwise it is a good entertainer, with good comedy and is over all a positive movie. It's fate, however depends on how the so-called masses take it!
